"For me, this is not just a matter of policy," she said. "It's personal. I stood next to President Obama as the Marines carried those flag-draped caskets off the plane at Andrews. I put my arms around the mothers and fathers, the sisters and brothers, the sons and daughters, and the wives left alone to raise their children."
Her voice cracked with emotion. For a brief moment it seemed she might actually break down, though she pulled it together and continued on.

Chicago rapper Chief Keef has been taken into custody after a juvenile court judge decided a video of him firing a semiautomatic rifle at a New York gun range was a violation of probation.
The artist, real name Keith Cozart, was sentenced last year to 18 months' probation after his conviction on aggravated unlawful use of a weapon charges for pointing a gun at police officers.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports Judge Carl Anthony Walker said the video showed a disregard for the court's authority. Walker scheduled a Thursday sentencing hearing for the 17-year-old Cozart.
Defense attorney Dennis Berkson told Walker his client never took the gun outside of the range and the target practice was supervised.
As part of the probation, the judge had ordered Cozart not to have contact with guns, gangs or drugs.
Chief Keef's first album, "Finally Rich," was released last year to mixed reviews. The album featured appearances by 50 Cent, Young Jeezy and Rick Ross.

A TEENAGE boy has fatally shot two adults and three children inside an Albuquerque, New Mexico, home, police say.
The boy, believed to be 15 years old, is in custody, charged with two counts of murder and three counts of "child abuse resulting in death."
He has since been identified as Nehemiah Griego.
Police have released the names and ages of the victims in the South Valley shooting.

Sarah Griego, 40
Zephania Griego, 9
Jael Griego, 5
Angelina Griego, 2
Police said in a statement they found the bodies of an adult male and female and two girls and a boy described as "juveniles," all dead from multiple gunshot wounds, when they arrived at an Albuquerque home late Saturday local time.
Neighbours say the victims were all members of the Griego family: Pastor Greg Griego and his wife Sarah who have10 children.
Greg Griego was a pastor of Calvary Albuquerque Church. He also was spiritual counselor to the Albuquerque Fire Department.
The local ABQ Journal reports neighbours as saying they had not known Nehemiah very well, other than he "wore nothing but camouflage stuff".
KOB 4 reports Nehemiah called someone after the shootings and that person called 911.
Aaron Williamson, a spokesman for the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office, said "multiple" weapons were found at the scene, including a "military-type assault rifle," adding that the investigation was still under way.
Local networks KOB Four and KOAT Seven said police have confirmed the gun used in the killing was an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle.
Mr Williamson said the boy's motive and connection to the five victims aren't immediately unknown.
The reports of the shooting came days after US President Barack Obama unveiled a series of sweeping measures aimed at addressing gun violence in the wake of last month's school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.
The proposed measures include a ban on some military-style assault rifles and closing loopholes that allow many gun buyers to avoid background checks.
The killing of 26 people at the Connecticut school, including 20 young children, has galvanized gun control advocates, but congressional opposition remains high to new restrictions on the constitutional right to bear arms.

Tiger Woods leads Farmers Insurance Open at halfway
Tiger Woods fired a seven-under 67 to lead by two shots at halfway in the Farmers Insurance Open in California.
The world number two resumed three behind overnight leaders Brandt Snedeker and KJ Choi but shot four birdies and an eagle in his opening 11 holes on Torrey Pines' north course.
The 14-time major champion reached 11 under to head Billy Horschel (69).
"I've had beautiful practice sessions at home," said Woods, who missed the cut in Abu Dhabi last week.
"If I can do it there, I can do it out here. Even though last week I played only two days, I felt like I hit the ball well enough to shoot a better score than I did. I had a couple of days to work on it, and I came out here and felt pretty good about it."
Woods has gone on to win 34 times out of 44 when holding at least a share of the 36-hole lead on the PGA Tour, though he has triumphed only twice from that position in his last six attempts.
The 37-year-old won his last major title, the 2008 US Open, at Torrey Pines and is a six-time winner of the Farmers Insurance Open at the venue.
Woods, who ended a lengthy barren run on the PGA Tour with three victories last year, is nine under par for the eight par-fives so far this week, and said: "That's basically where the round could be had.
"On the north course, drive the ball well here and you're going to probably have four-iron shots into the par-fives. We just happened to have the wind turn into us on nine, so I ended up hitting five-wood.
"But you sprinkle that in with probably four or five wedge shots in there, a round of six or seven under par is definitely conceivable."
England's Ross Fisher leaked two late bogeys to drop to seven under, while Ryder Cup stars Phil Mickelson and Nicolas Colsaerts and Scot Martin Laird were among those who scraped through right on the cut line of one under.

At least 232 people were killed in a nightclub fire in southern Brazil on Sunday after a band's pyrotechnics show set the building ablaze, and fleeing patrons were unable to find the emergency exits, local officials said.
Bodies were still being removed from the Kiss nightclub in the southern city of Santa Maria, Major Gerson da Rosa Ferreira, who was leading rescue efforts at the scene for the military police, said.
Local officials said 180 people were confirmed dead, and Ferreira said the death toll would rise above 200. He said the victims died of asphyxiation or from being trampled, and that there were possibly as many as 500 people inside the club when the fire broke out at about 2.30 am.
Brazilian television footage showed people sobbing outside the club, while shirtless firefighters used sledge hammers and axes to knock down an exterior wall to open up an exit.

A middle school biology teacher who was fired after students discovered she had starred in porn films has lost her bid to return to the classroom.
Stacie Halas, 32, was sacked from Haydock Intermediate School in Oxnard, California, after students downloaded clips onto their smartphones of her appearing in films such as 'Big Sausage Pizza' and presented them to school officials.
Halas, who appeared in the films under the name Tiffany Six, was fired from her job as a science teacher after the video surfaced in March but had hoped to make a return to the classroom. She lost an appeal against the decision on Tuesday.
She claimed she had only starred in the blue movies during an eight-month period from 2005 to 2006 because of financial problems after her boyfriend abandoned her and never when she was teaching.
But a three-judge panel unanimously decided her porn past meant she was unfit for the classroom.
Writing in a 46-page decision by the Commission on Professional Competence, Judge Julie Cabos-Owen said Halas had been continually deceitful about her nine-month career in porn before she went to work at the school.

"He kind of told you what your job description was going to be and kind of basically told you if you wanted to play on the Orioles, this was what you needed to do. And if you couldn't do it, I'll get someone else. I know that's kind of tough love, but I don't think anyone other than Marianna, his wife, would describe Earl as a warm and fuzzy guy."
Baseball lost another Hall of Famer later Saturday when longtime St. Louis Cardinals star Stan Musial died at age 92.
Weaver took the Orioles to the World Series four times over 17 seasons but won only one title, in 1970. His .583 winning percentage ranks fifth among managers who served 10 or more seasons in the 20th century.
Dick Gordon said Weaver's wife told him that Weaver went back to his cabin after dinner and began choking between 10:30 and 11 Friday night. Gordon said a cause of death has not been determined.

Did the “SNL” writers leave the Golden Globes winner and Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence hanging in the wind last night during her monologue? It was no Oscar-worthy performance. Stand-up takes another skill set and J. Law came across as a little stilted and high-school speechy, but also genuine and game.
The heart of Lawrence’s monologue was her take-down of her four fellow Best Actress Oscar nominees, one-by-one. Of her chief rival Jessica Chastain, Lawrence said, “Jessica Chastain – more like Jessica Chast-aint winning no Oscar on my watch. In ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ you caught Bin Laden. So what? In ‘Winter’s Bone’ I caught a squirrel – and then I ate it. Boom. Deal with that!” She went on to trash talk Naomi “What’s her problem” Watts, Emmanuelle Riva and Quvenzhane Wallis.
It was tricky territory for an Oscar contender and the jokes needed to be sharper. There were occasional chuckles but no LOL moments. The ‘SNL’ writers really let Lawrence down with the soft-target jibes at notoriously grouchy Tommy Lee Jones. Placing Bill Hader in the studio audience to repeat, and repeat, the “Lincoln” star’s awards-night sour puss was a throwaway. And that joke about eating baby corn like corn-on-the-cob: really? That was old in Lincoln’s day.
One can only hope that most Academy members were already tucked into their Tempurpedics before the show aired.
The takeaway over at The Hollywood Reporter was that while Lawrence was “serving” her rivals, the writers served her up to scrutiny. Blame it on the paid comic professionals agreed a commenter named Sarah, “Jennifer is hilarious...she's hilarious in real life and hilarious in silver linings...the writing was just HORRIBLE. she had nothing to work with.” Len Feldman agreed: “In a year where SNL's writing has been as bad as I can remember (and I remember all the way back to Season 1,) this was perhaps the worst-written episode of the season. Jennifer Lawrence did the best she could with truly awful material.”

January. Everyone knows it is when the mediocre to the truly awful hobble off to die a quick death after beating each other senseless for a quick buck in the box office arena. When a film gets slated for release it is because there are no other contenders to fight for those dollars, or it won't survive any other time anyway.
After all, everyone with any sense is scrambling to see the Oscar nominees. So one approaches January movies with a mix of optimism and dread. Two genre-specific movies are being released this week. If you are a fan of horror or ultra-violent action flicks, the studios are expecting you to gravitate away from those Oscar-nominated and towards these unproven offerings.
The Last Stand is a "comeback" vehicle for Arnold Schwarzenegger directed by Korean auteur Jee-woon Kim in his first American film. Mama is produced by Guillermo Del Toro, offering a feature-length version of director Andres Muschietti's impressive terror-filled short of the same name, and stars box office and indie darling Jessica Chastain.
While both movies have their strengths, they both fall significantly short of filmgoers' expectations, and neither rise far above the usual January fare.
Mama is respectably creepy but uneven from the start, and ultimately unsatisfying and muddled. The Last Stand, which should be far more ashamed of itself, amounts to just so much NRA porn.

When President Barack Obama looks west across the national mall from the Capitol on Monday, his panorama will include the spot to the right where contractors are building the National Museum of African American History and Culture by the foot of the Washington Monument.

As he takes the oath of office on the federal holiday marking King’s birthday, Obama will place his left hand on a bible once owned by King, an explicit consecration of the often implicit connection between the most prominent leader of the civil rights movement and the first black president.
The comparison between the two men will be inescapable Monday, as will the debate over Obama’s treatment of the black community — a motif that has resurfaced again early in his second term over diversity in the upper ranks of his administration.
Sill, supporters of both Obama and civil rights may find this inauguration even a bit sweeter than the first, and that Obama’s tie to King is now stronger.
“If you look at what they’re struggling to do,” says Hilary Shelton, the director of the NAACP’s Washington Bureau, “in many ways it is the same vision, that vision and commitment to help America become all it promises to be.”
Greg Carr, chair of Afro-American Studies at Howard University, said Obama’s reelection “accentuates” the historic nature of his presidency for the African American community because it validated his time in office.
”What may have had a sense of an insurgent victory four years ago now has more of a national consensus flavor,” he said. “With the first inauguration there was almost a sense that … we did it against improbable odds, but now it’s the norm of sorts.”
But Obama is still taking the Oath of Office amid criticism that there is not enough diversity among his Cabinet and White House staff. It’s the latest round in attacks that Obama hasn’t done enough for the black community. His campaign was forced to launch a drive to hire black staff, some African American leaders felt that he paid too little attention to black unemployment rates in his first term, and others worried that he spoke too infrequently about major civil rights issues. Often, the complaints came from black elected officials.
