The Safeway Classic is an annual golf tournament for professional female golfers on the LPGA Tour. Founded in 1972, the 54-hole event takes place every year in the Portland, Oregon area and is the oldest continuous event on the LPGA Tour. Tournament Golf Foundation has managed the tournament since its beginning and also managed the Safeway International tournament on the LPGA Tour. The 2008 Safeway International Presented by Coca-Cola marked the conclusion of Safeway's sponsorship of the Phoenix, Arizona area LPGA event.
Proceeds from the tournament are donated to local children's charities; over $15 million has been donated since 1972.
The tournament has had a variety of sponsors during its history. Its current title sponsor is Safeway Inc., North America's fourth largest supermarket chain
On the Ladies Professional Golf Association Tour, the LPGA Safeway Classic this week, held August 17th through the 19th, in North Plains Oregon. This tournament is presented byCoca-Cola and it is going to be worth $1,500,000. The following LPGA event is the August 23rd through the 26th CN Canadian Women's Open, held in Coquitlam, British Columbia in Canada. After that, there will be a September 6th through the 9th tournament called the Kingsmill Championship, held in Williamsburg, Virginia. The Ricoh Women's British Open follows.
Most recently, the Jamie Farr Toledo Classic presented by Kroger, Owens, Corning and O-I was held in Syvania, Ohio, the 9th through the 12th of August. So Yeon Ryu was the winner of that event. Last year, it was Suzann Petterson who came from being back nine strokes to take home the title, leaving Na Yeon Choi in second after a playoff. The field for this event consists of Heather Bowie Young, Amanda Blumenherst, Na Yeon Choi, Jacqui Conolino and Irene Cho as well as Beth Bader, Laura Diaz, Moira Dunn and Natalie Gulbis.
